Tipi

A Tipi is the traditional tent of the native North Americans, as found on the plains of the 'Wild West' in the 1700’s.
It is constructed with a number of poles crossed and tied at the top, with a canvas covering. A fire can be lit in the middle for warmth and cooking, the smoke passing through an opening at the top of the tent. Flaps on the outside of the tipi direct the smoke depending on the prevailing wind.

This is a peaceful “hideaway” location with beautiful views across the rolling hills and farmland, and is ideal for relaxing for a couple of days or longer. We found the site during a whistle stop tour of Wales in our new motor home and we will certainly be returning soon.

The site is located on a smallholding which the owners, John and Steph Adams, run on a self sufficiency basis rather than as a commercial farm. Consequently there are a few sheep, a few cattle, a pig and some ponies around the farm with chicken and ducks to keep everyone amused. Eggs and some other basic supplies can be obtained from the farmhouse, but don’t expect a shop or any other facility provided on a large commercial campsite. The resident cats who really own the place, are friendly but are not at all intimidated by an approaching four tonne motor home! You may have to get out and move one or more from the driveway.

Within reason, you are invited to walk around the farm and enjoy the surroundings; you can even fish from the River Marteg that forms one boundary or marvel at the wild flowers that thrive in the adjacent meadow. There is a field used for occasional rallies and a bunkhouse net to the farmhouse.

The five pitches are of grass and have shrubs marking the boundaries. We were there early in September after a period of rain and the ground remained firm. Each pitch has electric hook up points (four at sixteen amps, the other twelve amps). You will need to have your own facilities as none are provided, but the chemical disposal and fresh/waste water facilities are easy to access and use.(you’ll need a hose or bucket as there is no drive over waste point, but most of us carry those anyway, don’t we?)

Access to and from the site is via a narrow driveway with a couple of sharp turns, but it’s no problem if you’re careful unless you have an extremely large unit. Our unit is 3.03m high, 2.31m wide (plus mirrors) and 7.6m long; we had no problem at all. The last section of road is a single track with passing places, but traffic is pretty much non existent. Booking is not usually necessary, but I would recommend checking in high season.

Buzzards, red kites and many other birds can be seen in the skies over your pitch. An otter has been seen at the river, too. The Elan Valley with wonderful walking and cycling is only a few miles away where there’s plenty of parking for motor homes at the visitor centre.

This is a wonderful place for a get away from it all holiday. A warm welcome awaits you.
